Supported by the British Council, Durham University is delighted to announce five fully funded scholarships for female students from wider Europe interested in pursuing master’s studies in the 2026/27 academic year.
Applications from women whose identities include multiple intersecting factors, including race, class, religion and women who are single mothers are particularly welcome.
Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
To be eligible for the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM, you must:
• Be a woman as defined under UK legislation.
• Be a passport holder and permanent resident of one of the eligible countries;
- Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia
• Have submitted an application to study on one of the eligible Durham University postgraduate programmes, as listed above.
• Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at Durham University by the time you submit your application and be due to start your postgraduate programme in the UK.
• Demonstrate a case for financial support need via a means-test conducted by Durham University.
• Have not previously studied at degree level or higher in the UK or lived recently in the UK.
• You must not be in receipt of financial support or funding towards your study programme in the UK from any other source.
• Meet the English language requirement of Durham University (or are expected to meet the requirement after a 6 or 10 week English Language pre-sessional course offered by Durham University).
• Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your scholarship award has ended.
You are also required to show in your application form that:
• You are active in the field with work experience or with a proven interest in the programme area you are applying for.
• You are willing to demonstrate future contribution to capacity-building and socio-economic advancement through the benefits achieved after graduating from UK higher education and returning your home country.
• You must demonstrate in your application a plan and passion to engage other women and girls in STEM from your home country.
• You agree that your personal data being shared with the British Council as a condition of applying for the bursary.
• If you are awarded a scholarship, you agree to maintain contact with the British Council and act as an ambassador for the UK and engage with activities as part of a British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM alumnus during and after your study in the UK. Any involvement in these activities during your study in the UK will take up no more than five hours per term.
Value of Scholarship:
The British Council Women in STEM Scholarships covers the following;
i. Full tuition fees
ii. Living expenses
iii. A return economy class ticket
iv. Other study-related costs such as IELTS exam fee, visa application, NHS surcharge and study materials.
v. Allowance for one accompanying child (where applicable)
There are also several opportunities for recipients in terms of connections to Industry, Internships, Placements, Networking etc.
Scholarship Application Guide:
To apply;
i. Complete an academic application to Durham University for one of the eligible programmes by 1st April, 2026 via the postgraduate on-line application portal.
- When completing your postgraduate on-line academic application form for your programme of study: In the section on Funding please answer 'yes' to the question 'Have your either applied or are going to apply for a scholarship? Then select 'Other' from the dropdown list of options and type 'British Council Women in STEM Scholarship' and put in 30th June 2026 as the expected award date. You are not required to upload any scholarship document at this point.
- The deadline to pay the deposit to secure your place at Durham University if you receive an offer will be postponed till after the result of this scholarship is released only if you have indicated you are applying to this scholarship in your academic application form.
