Joseph A. Vaughn Scholarships honor the memory of the late Joseph Vaughn, Furman’s first African-American student. Vaughn Scholarships will be awarded to five, new, incoming freshman students who currently reside in the state of South Carolina and have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and a strong commitment to their communities.
Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
To be eligible, applicants must;
i. Reside in the state of South Carolina
ii. Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement
iii. Have a strong commitment to leadership, service, and resiliency
Value of Scholarship:
The following benefits are awarded to Vaughn Scholarship recipients;
i. Full Scholarship covering tuition, room, board, and all fees, renewable for four years or eight semesters.
ii. Participation in the Riley Institute’s Advantage Scholars, a three-day residential program for incoming freshmen to discuss real-world issues and build community
iii. Membership in Furman’s Community of Scholars, which provides social and intellectual programming through a variety of additional scholars opportunities throughout the year.
Scholarship Application Guide:
i. Students will automatically be considered for the Vaughn Scholarship based on their .
ii. Select students will be identified by the Vice President for Enrollment Management and will be invited to participate in a selection interview in March.
