Scholarship Summary: 
W&L's Johnson Scholarship Program selects students (domestic and international) on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and their potential to contribute to the intellectual and civic life of the W&L campus and of the world at large in years to come. Johnson Scholarships are awarded to approximately 10% of each entering class.

Scholarship Applicant Criteria: 
Approximately 10% of each entering class for the Johnson Scholarship will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership. They will be judged on their potential to contribute to the intellectual and civic life of the W&L campus and of the world at large in years to come. Writing samples, teacher recommendations, and records of leadership, citizenship, and involvement in non-academic activities will be weighed.

Value of Scholarship: 
The benefits of the Johnson Scholarship include;
i. Winners of the Johnson Scholarship receive awards of at least tuition, room and board to attend Washington and Lee University. Students with financial need higher than this amount will have any additional need met by the scholarship.
ii. In addition, Johnson Scholars receive funding up to $7,000 to support summer experiences during their time at W&L.

Scholarship Application Guide: 
A complete application consists of:
i. A complete Common Application including the Johnson Scholarship Application essay
ii. An official copy of your high school transcript
iii. Self-reported or official scores from the SAT or ACT (optional) {W&L's SAT code is 5887 and W&L's ACT code is 4430}
iv. Two Teacher recommendations
v. One school counsellor recommendation and secondary school form

Finalists for Johnson Scholarships participate in an on-campus competition and are notified in late March of their status. All costs associated with attending the competition will be paid by Washington and Lee University, including travel expenses (airfare or mileage costs), meals and lodging for the duration of the competition.
