Scholarship Summary:
The UMassD Doctoral Fellowships are awarded to academically strong doctoral applicants (domestic and international) with the potential to succeed at UMassD and beyond. The goal for this award is to recognize academic excellence and artistic talent while reducing the cost of advanced study.
Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must;
i. Possess outstanding GRE scores and GPAs from excellent schools.
ii. Plan to enroll for full-time PhD studies
Value of Scholarship:
The UMassD Doctoral Fellowships are namely as follows;
i. Distinguished Doctoral Fellows
- Distinguished Doctoral Fellows receive a $24,000 annual stipend plus full tuition and college fee credit. Their support is guaranteed for up to 4 years post-bachelor´s or up to three years post-master´s degree (subject to enrolling full-time, maintaining a 3.5 GPA, and making satisfactory progress). These awards will be issued only to outstanding applicants.
ii. First Year Doctoral Fellows
- First Year Doctoral Fellows receive one year of support that includes a stipend of $20,000 plus full tuition and college fee credit. Like Distinguished Doctoral Fellowships, these will be awarded only to strong applicants who enroll full-time, maintain a 3.5 GPA, and make satisfactory progress.
iii. Distinguished Art Fellowships
- Distinguished Art Fellowships are available to students applying to the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program. These fellowships are intended to attract students of unusual artistic ability. Distinguished Art Fellows receive a $17,000 annual stipend plus full tuition and college fee credit for up to three years as MFA students subject to maintaining full-time status, a 3.5 GPA and making satisfactory progress in the program.
Scholarship Application Guide:
To apply;
i. Prospective PhD scholarship recipients are to for their selected doctoral program.
ii. Nomination Process: the Graduate Program Director (GPD) should send an e-mail to the Associate Provost for Graduate Studies indicating his/her wish to nominate the student (multiple nominations are allowed).
- A Doctoral Fellow must have an identified faculty sponsor who has agreed to supervise the student´s dissertation research
iii. Final selection of the Doctoral Fellows will be made by the Associate Provost for Graduate Studies in consultation with the the respective Graduate Program Director and the Dean of the respective College(s)
- The selection process will include a presentation by the faculty sponsor to the selection committee on the significance and potential of the student´s work.
