Scholarship Summary:

Furman merit scholarships are awarded to select incoming freshmen students (in-state, out-of-state and international) who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and a strong commitment to their communities. Students will be considered for these scholarships based on their admission application. There is no interview required to be selected for these scholarships.

Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
There are no set criteria for consideration but committee members will be seeking scholars who have demonstrated a passion for helping others and making an impact in their communities. Eligible candidates must have demonstrated strong leadership skills and hope to continue a high level of civic engagement while attending Furman.

Value of Scholarship:
Furman freshmen merit Scholarships are valued as follows;
For domestic students
a. The John D. Hollingsworth (in-state residents) and Charles H. Townes (out-of-state residents) scholarships provide the following benefits;
  • $35,000 per year, renewable for four years
  • A stipend of up to $2,000 for a Furman, faculty-led Study Away experience
  • A stipend of up to $3,000 for a summer internship or research experience
  • Participation in Public Leadership Seminars which connect students with government and civic leaders
  • Participation in the Riley Institute’s Advantage Scholars, a four-day residential program for incoming freshmen to discuss real-world issues and build community
b. Bell Tower Scholarships: Amount varies

For international students
International freshmen scholarships start from $15,000 - full tuition per year

All above scholarships are renewable for four years.

Scholarship Application Guide:
Applicants will be automatically considered for academic scholarships once they have submitted a Common Application. There is no interview required to be selected for these scholarships.
