All eligible domestic students automatically qualify to participate in the annual Presidential Scholarship Competition. Students attending these events compete for the full-tuition Presidential Scholarship.
Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
To be eligible for the scholarship competition, participants must meet the following requirements;
i. Have a one of the following academic requirements;
- GPA of 3.1-3.49 on a 4.0 scale and score a minimum 26 ACT/1230 SAT score
- GPA of 3.5-3.89 GPA WITH a 24 ACT/1160 SAT
- 3.9+ GPA with any or no a test score
ii. Apply and be accepted to Bluffton University by the above deadline
All participants will receive a $1,000 annual scholarship for four years, just for participating in the Presidential Scholarship Competition.
Scholarship Application Guide:
If eligible, you will be invited to attend the Presidential Scholarship at the Bluffton campus (the first 80 people to register will be eligible to compete for the full-tuition scholarship);
COMPETITION FORMAT
1) Participating students prepare for the competition by completing an assigned reading that is chosen by the faculty lecturer for the competition.
2) Once on campus for the competition, students will attend a 45-minute presentation from the Presidential Scholarship Lecturer. Students are encouraged to take notes during this lecture.
3) After the lecture, participants will have approximately 90 minutes to write an essay in response to a question provided on the topics of both the reading and the lecture. Students may use the assigned reading and notes taken during the lecture as reference when writing their essay.
CHOOSING A WINNER
The Presidential Scholarship Competition winner is chosen based on 3 criteria:
i. Essay scored by two Bluffton University faculty members
ii. GPA
iii. ACT/SAT
For the Fall 2026 session, high-achieving high school students will be invited to campus on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026 for the scholarship competition.
