The prestigious Davis Fellowship, established by Norwood and Marguerite Davis, is awarded every other year to one member of the incoming class (US citizens and residents only) matriculating at Hampden-Sydney College (a men's only college).
Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
To be eligible, the potential Davis Fellow will have;
i. Demonstrated intellectual competence, energy, competitive instincts, and passion in an area of special interest-whether that be in intellectual achievements, the arts, the sciences, student leadership positions, extracurricular activities, civic affairs, community service, or other endeavors.
ii. The drive and tenacity to endure hardship in pursuit of personal goals, and will be a competitor and risk-taker.
iii. Compassion for those around him, especially in interactions with peers and others in the community.
Value of Scholarship:
The Davis Fellow will receive grants for full tuition for four years, as long as he continues to make satisfactory progress as a full-time student at the College, and maintains a well-integrated role in Hampden- Sydney's academic, cultural, and extra-curricular life.
Scholarship Application Guide:
To apply;
i. Complete an into the College by December 1st, 2025.
ii. Qualified applicants will then be identified by the Dean of Admission and invited to submit an application for the Davis Fellowship [Nomination Process (Deadline: January 1)].
iii. By February 10, any applicant deemed as a possible candidate for the Davis Fellow will be sent a letter by the Dean of Admissions as well as a copy of that letter sent to the Guidance Counselor at his high school inviting him to submit an application for the Fellowship.
iv. The Application will consist of three parts:
- Resume: A summary of academic achievements and extracurricular involvement, including honors, awards, leadership roles, and other notable experiences.
- Essay: A personal statement discussing your academic interests, extracurricular activities, and future career aspirations. The essay should also address why you believe you are a strong candidate for the Davis Fellowship.
- Letter of Recommendation: A letter from a teacher, coach, mentor, or another individual who can speak to your qualifications for the Fellowship.
v. All application materials should be submitted electronically to admissions@hsc.edu, with the subject line "Davis Fellowship Candidate," by the deadline. (Please make sure all attachments are under 5MB).
vi. By approximately March 1, the Admission and Scholarships Committee will select 3-5 candidates to invite to campus for an interview. These candidates will be notified accordingly.
vii. On April 5, following the Admitted Student Day program, the selection committee will conduct in-person interviews.
- Interviewees should be prepared to meet with several members of the committee and should note that lunch will be provided.
- Candidates will be responsible for their travel arrangements; however, travel reimbursement will be available from the Fellowship.
viii. Following the interviews, the Davis Fellowship Committee will select one individual to be named the Davis Fellow. The remaining candidates will be ranked in order of preference.
ix. The selected Davis Fellow will be notified via telephone by a representative of the Davis family.
x. The recipient will have until May 1st, the National Candidate’s Reply Date, to formally accept the award. The recipient is encouraged to inform the College of their decision prior to that date. The remaining candidates will be offered the Fellowship in order of the Committee’s ranked preference.
